York County Heritage Trail

On August 2, 2010, we rode the Heritage Trail from Brillhart Station in Pennsylvania to the Mason Dixon Line and back. I really enjoyed this ride which runs next to a working railroad and the farmlands that you pass are beautiful. Over a distance of 21 miles there is an elevation change of about 400 feet and the elevation change is most noticeable between Glen Rock and New Freedom. There are many picnic tables and benches along the route for taking breaks and large port-o-potties that are wheel chair accessible. There is even an ice cream stop right along the trail! While there are a number of road crossings along the trail, none were very busy.

An Unexpected Painting
Just north of the Howard Tunnel, on the rock face is this painting of a train. It’s easy to miss as you are peddling by and there is no documentation about it and we only discovered it after having it pointed out to us by a gentleman in New Freedom, PA. According to him, the painting was originally done illegally and anonymously and when the authorities learned of it’s existence, they wanted it removed, but it’s a nicely done painting and the community was able to save it. With the passage of time, weather took it’s toll. It became faded and scratched. The artist contacted the authorities to see if they wanted it restored, which they did and the second time he worked on it he signed his name. It’s dated 1999.
